Kennett Summary

HANOVER BOYS EXPLODE IN 10-0 WIN OVER KENNETT

The Hanover High boys returned to the friendly confines of Merriman-Branch Field in style Saturday, hammering winless Kennett 10-0. The Marauders scored four times in less than three minutes in a dazzling stretch early in the first half, turning a mundane 1-0 lead into a lights-out smackdown. From that moment on it was a matter of handling the situation well and giving every healthy field player plenty of playing time. The win was Hanover’s seventh straight on the season, and extended their unbeaten streak to 34 games, now the second-longest in school history.

Ben Rimmer and Eric Jayne each tallied twice, and eight different players scored overall, including three for the first time. Several of the goals were particularly well-executed, making the match more than just a routine exercise between teams at the opposite ends of the Class I table.

The Marauders wasted no time getting down to business, and after Yosef Osheyack had announced himself with a blast off the upright in the second minute, Eric Jayne broke the ice in the eight minute after a short corner kick that caught Kennett napping. Ben Rimmer took the pass off the restart and raced into the Eagle box before dishing to Jayne at the top of the box. Jayne clicked his red shoes together three times and ripped a shot off a Kennett defender and into the back of the next. Kennett goalie Sam Burroughs turned to a teammate and said, “I don’t think we’re in Kansas any more, Toto.” Little did he know that a house was about to land on his head.

Henry Caldwell started the perfect storm in the 14th minute by taking a pass from Kevin Dade and finishing clinically. Dade then announced his intention to come out of the game, and then turned and headed a high ball over a defender, collected it on the other side, and beat the keeper to the ball before depositing it into the net 90 seconds later. Twenty-one second after that Caldwell set Ben Rimmer free on the right flank and the speedy senior hit an amazing scorcher into the upper 90 on the near side. As a sea of subs hurridly warmed up (and Ben Harris took his sweet time), Rimmer knew he was ticketed for the bench, but not before he took a nice feed from Osheyack and finished the blitz 43 seconds later. Four goals in two minutes, 26 seconds. 5-0. Game over.

As was the case in the preceding game against Bishop Brady, the level of play hardly dropped with ten substitutes in the match in front of starting keeper Rhys Cyrus. Hanover continued to dominate play, and tacked on a sixth goal two minutes from time when Miles Peterson took a nice feed from his warmup partner Isaiah Fariel and scored his first varsity goal after barely missing on a few earlier chances.

The second half started auspiciously for the Marauders, with freshman Trey Rebman threading a perfect through pass for Fariel, whose cold-hearted finish on the ensuing breakaway netted him his second score of the season. Rebman earned a second assist three minutes later when he took a great pass from now-center midfielder Rhys Cyrus and ripped a shot off the post. Continuing the success of the Class of 2012, Roland Stanzel beat two players to the rebound and rammed home a shot for his first career goal.

Leading 8-0, the Marauders began to face the need to negotiate the delicate area of how to address the concept of “running up the score”. Soccer presents unique challenges in this area that make it harder to avoid the appearances of doing this. In football, you can run instead of pass when you are ahead. In basketball you stop pressing and work the clock. In soccer, it’s hard to alter the way you play, especially when the players involved are dying to perform the way they have been trained, and have had little time. Kennett was trying hard, and not giving up. They deserved respect, and the best way to show this was to keep playing, albeit with starting strikers and other scorers on the bench. To the credit of both teams, the final 25 minutes were well-played, and the game was honored. Trevor Barlowe scored his first career goal on a penalty kick, hitting a second try after his first successful attempt was called back on an encroachment penalty. Eric Jayne finished the scoring on a nice give-and-go with Yosef Osheyack, and the match was in the books.

The homestand continues Wednesday with a game against Plymouth, followed by Saturday’s derby with Lebanon. The latter match will provide the entire Upper Valley soccer community to collect food for the Haven, a repeat of last year’s successful food drive. More details will follow on this worthy community service initiative.

Bishop Brady Summary

HANOVER BOYS HIT HIGH GEAR IN 4-0 WIN AT BISHOP BRADY

The Hanover High boys ran their winning streak to six on Thursday, playing some of their best offensive soccer of the season in a 4-0 win over Bishop Brady at NH Voc-Tech in Concord. Oscar Eriksson scored twice and Lou Gemunden and Ben Harris tallied their first career goals to pace the offense, with Ben Rimmer notching two assists and Trevor Barlowe adding one. The Marauders dominated the game statistically, outshooting Bishop Brady 24-2 and taking nine corner kicks to the Green Giants’ one. Stefan Dyroff did not need to make a save to record his second shutout of the season.

The match started auspiciously for Hanover. With less than a minute gone, Ben Rimmer carried the ball deep into Brady’s end and hit a long, high centering pass that eluded Green Giant goalie Scott Hambleton. Eriksson was waiting for the rebound and lofted the ball into the net for his third goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. The Marauders continued their pressure and doubled the margin in the 17th minute when Rimmer got free on the right side of the Brady box and found Gemunden, who had overlapped from his right back position. Lou directed the ball into the net for his first goal, and Hanover led 2-0. Despite a continuing offensive edge that saw them take six corner kicks to Brady’s one, the score remained the same for the remainder of the half.

Charged in the interval with increasing their intensity, the Marauders responded with their best attacking soccer of the year. Kevin Dade took a lead pass from Henry Caldwell and hit a first-time shot that was headed for the near corner before Hambleton made a sprawling save. Caldwell created three more excellent chances, just missing with a torrid left footer from the top of the box. Rimmer broke in and hit a screamer headed for the far upper corner that was spectacularly saved and held by Hambelton. Twenty minutes into the half came a goal that no goalie could handle, as Eriksson took a feed from midfield ruining mate Trevor Barlowe and drove the ball high onto the net for his fourth goal of the season. Four minutes later sophomore Ben Harris hit an 18-yarder for his first career goal, and the Marauders had their highest goal output of the season, and a 4-0 lead.

As Coach Grabill cleared the bench, Hanover continued to dominate. Eric Jayne and Roland Stanzel-Herrmann dominated the play at center midfield, and Matt Barth and Chris Jayne held similar sway as center backs. Jake Harris and Andrew Holzberger showed high energy and madd skillz on the right flank. Hayden Pressey-Murray hit several tantalizing crosses in his first in-season varsity action. The game ended with no further scoring, but Hanover firmly in control.

“This was an impressive result for us,” commented Coach Grabill. “Brady had some good results going into the match, including 1-0 losses to both Lebanon and Pembroke. It’s an excellent sign that we were able to impose ourselves offensively on a squad that had such a good defensive record.”

Next up for the Marauders is a three-game home stretch after four on the road, commencing with a Saturday match at 12:00 against winless Kennett. Rain is in the forecast, but nothing short of a monsoon will threaten the match, given the ability of the turf at Merriman-Branch field to shed water. Even if it’s the only game played in the state this weekend, it will go on as scheduled.

Pembroke Summary

HANOVER WINS BATTLE OF UNBEATENS TO GO 5-0

The Hanover High boys soccer team completed an arduous stretch of three road games in four days, the final two against unbeaten squads, posting a 2-1 victory Friday over Pembroke Academy to stretch their winning streak to five games. Goals by Yosef Osheyack and Eric Jayne and a tenacious defense were the keys to victory for the Marauders, now one of only two teams in Class I without a loss or a tie.

A large crowd lined the sidelines of the immaculate Northeast Soccer Club pitch, anticipating the showdown between three-time defending Class I champion Hanover and a 5-0 Pembroke squad considered by many to be a worthy contender for the crown. The game did not disappoint, featuring passion, physical play and a trio of highlight-reel goals.

Hanover made the first bid to break the ice when Ben Rimmer sent a long ball from the right flank across the mouth of the Pembroke goal, connecting with Yosef Osheyack, whose diving header was denied with a dazzling save by Spartan goalkeeper Sam Harty. Osheyack would not be denied in the eighteenth minute, taking a cross from Henry Caldwell and beating two defenders before lashing a shot inside the far post for his first goal of the season.

The Marauders increased the pressure as the first half wore on. Osheyack, continuing his high-level play, had two more shots, and Eric Jayne also began finding the range. With less than a minute to play in the half the Marauders struck for a second goal when Ben Rimmer battled in the box for a loose ball and slipped the sphere to Jayne, who ripped a shot inside the left post for his first goal of the season.

Sitting on a 2-0 lead at halftime should have been enough for almost any Hanover team, given their parsimonious defensive tendencies. Coach Grabill had done his best to rest players during strategic intervals in both the first half and throughout the previous night’s Laconia game, trying to minimize fatigue as a factor. Jayne, Miles Peterson Ben Harris and Joe Carey all saw first half action and were ready to spell the starters again in the second half.

Despite all of the above advantages, Pembroke dug deep and demonstrated that they were indeed for real. They didn’t dominate play, but they at least held their own, and did an excellent job of disrupting any attempts Hanover made to pad the lead. Mounting pressure on the Marauder defense more than once, the Spartans were denied a sure goal when Rhys Cyrus made a spectacular block of a close range shot by striker Bill Bernier at the near post. With less than ten minutes to go in the match their persistence paid off when they earned a corner kick and pulled a goal back with a textbook header, with Ryan Clark finishing off a Beckhamesque serve by midfielder Brandon Ricker.

Now completely energized and urged on by the vocal crowd, Pembroke pressed hard for equalizer and earned their fourth corner of the half, only to be denied by a Hanover defense which bent but never broke. Their poise under pressure paid off with several good clearances, and the Marauders were able to manage the game and walk away as victors in a match that could well be a preview of a postseason rematch at Stellos Stadium in November.

“That wasn’t artistic,” commented Coach Grabill, “But we clearly demonstrated that we know what to do at the end of a match to get a result, and I couldn’t be more pleased. We are exactly a quarter of the way through our season, and this team has learned a great deal in a short time. We haven’t had an easy game since the start of the season, and we are a great deal better for having experienced so much, and learned how to win games.”

The road-weary Marauders will welcome the weekend off, and then go back to work Monday in preparation for their fifth away game in six matches, a Thursday trip to Concord to play Bishop Brady. They will finally return home on Saturday the 27th for a match with cross-state rival Kennett. For now, they can rest for a few days and savor a 5-0 record and the satisfaction of knowing that it’s getting lonelier at the top of Class I

Laconia Summary

HANOVER KEEPS ROLLING WITH A WIN AT LACONIA

The Hanover High boys soccer team continued to play well and get a good result Thursday night at Laconia, stretching their season-opening win streak to four with a satisfying 3-1 victory over undefeated Laconia. The Marauders took a 2-0 lead on goals by Ben Rimmer and Oscar Eriksson, and after surrendering their first score of the season they roared back and left no doubt as to the eventual result, mounting a steady offensive attack that resulted in Kevin Dade’s first goal of the season and a 3-1 final scoreline.

Laconia entered the game with a 3-0-1 record and visions of beating the Marauders for the first time in the history of their program. Boosted by a good-sized crowd at spacious Robbie Mills Field, they worked hard and showed the sort of spunk that had earned them tournament spots the past several seasons. Hanover withstood their pressure, which resulted in only one first half shot, and took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when Trevor Barlowe’s crossing pass found Ben Rimmer behind the Laconia defense and with plenty of time to beat goalie Justin Wirth to the ball and slip it into the open net for his second goal of the season. Most of the remaining play was at midfield, as Hanover’s offense sputtered but their defense remained resolute. Chris Jayne did a nice job at right back, filling in for an ailing Lou Gemunden, and Miles Peterson came off the bench to give valuable minutes up front, taking the spot normally held by Eric Jayne, who was also nursing a sore foot.

Laconia nearly tied the game on the opening kickoff of the second half, as Sachem sniper Arso Kuridza received the first touch and launched a half-field ICBM that nearly took Sam Gest by surprise in the Marauder goal. The junior netminder managed to deflect the ball off the goalpost and out of bounds, and Hanover dodged a bullet. Only a minute later the score was 2-0 when Eriksson took a pass from Yosef Osheyack and scored in his second straight game from his favorite spot at the top of the penalty area.

Laconia refused to fold and pulled a goal back when they earned a free kick on one of those ticky-tack little calls, which happen all of the time but nevertheless betray a stunning lack of knowledge about the flow of the game. Given a direct kick 25 yards away, Kuridza showed why he is Laconia’s top striker by hitting a laser into the upper ninety. It was a beautifully taken goal, and it seemed to shake up the Marauders for a few minutes.

It didn’t take long for Hanover to mount the sort of second-half charge that is now becoming commonplace for them. Ben Rimmer and Yosef Osheyack were dangerous on the flanks, and Trevor Barlowe continued to win every head ball at midfield, distributing flawlessly and keying the attack. Oscar the Grouch hit another Scud from the edge of the box that smacked off the inside of the left post before rolling across the face of the goal and eventually out. Ben Harris, brilliant in relief at midfield, made several dangerous forays into the Laconia box. Miles Peterson struck a challenging turn-around shot that was well-saved by Wirth. Chris Jayne and Joe Carey helped regulars Dan Remillard and Nate Hanna keep things clean in the back, and late in the game Jayne came forward on the right flank and served a ball that found Kevin Dade in front for a near post header that barely grazed his head before beating Wirth to the near side and an eventual 3-1 result.

Coach Grabill was sanguine after the match about Laconia’s sole score, commenting, “It wasn’t took upsetting to see a team finally score on us after an eight-game run dating back to last year. In a way it takes the pressure off, and we stayed perfect in the only column that really matters. I was pleased that we had the chance to show some composure under stress, and that was valuable.”

Next up for the Marauders in a 24-hour turnaround and a date in Pembroke with the 5-0 Spartans, eagerly awaiting their homecoming opponent and a chance to make a splash in Class I. “All of our scouting reports suggest that they have a lot of talent and are highly motivated,” said Grabill. “There’s no better way for us to close out a busy week, and we are looking forward to this sort of a challenge, and will learn a lot about ourselves.”

Kearsarge Summary

HANOVER BLANKS KEARSARGE FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

The Hanover High boys soccer team secured its third win of the young season in dramatic fashion Tuesday night, earning a 1-0 victory over Kearsarge with a goal in the final minute of play by Swedish exchange student Oscar Eriksson. The goal capped a furious second half assault on the Cougar that threatened to go unfulfilled until the Marauder center midfielder took a slick pass from Nate Hanna, beat a defender and ripped a left-footed rocket from 18 yards that gave Hanover their third straight victory.

It was also the third straight shutout for the Marauder defense, which put the clamps on Kearsarge all night, denying them all but a handful of lukewarm scoring chances. Sophomore Stefan Dyroff collected his first career shutout, and became the third Hanover goalkeeper in three games to blank the opposition.

The Marauders held a territorial edge in the first half, but were unable to threaten seriously. Henry Caldwell and Kevin Dade authored a few shots that had some promise, and Eric Jayne had one look that didn’t miss by much Hanover had a 5-0 edge in corner kicks, several of which were converted into dangerous crosses, but Kearsarge keeper Brett Bascom did a nice job handling everything that came his way. The Cougars pushed their defensive line well away from their goal and trapped Hanover off sides four times, and it appeared as though it would take more than the first half for the Marauders to solve the puzzle.

Midway through the first half Marauder midfielder Yosef Osheyack lost one of his hearing aids after a collision, and the only recourse was to wait until halftime to search for it. The entire Hanover side fanned out on the dew-drenched football field to search in the harsh spot lit shadows, and were soon joined by not only the Kearsarge team but also all of the fans. It was an incredible, spontaneous act of consideration and sportsmanship that transcended the normal parameters of a high school sporting event. The search was unsuccessful and the game resumed after the extended halftime, but the class of the Kearsarge community illuminated the rest of the night.

Unquestionably appreciative, Hanover nevertheless got down to business in the second half and turned up the heat on their hosts. The field slowly tilted toward the Kearsarge goal, and the Marauder offense began to click on all cylinders. Spurred by the outstanding flank play from a newly-energized Osheyack and Ben Rimmer, the Marauders completely took over the match. Trevor Barlowe was a monster in the center of the park, wining countless headers and marshalling the defense with his possession and his passing.

Dan Remillard just missed redirecting one of Osheyack’s corner kicks over the bar. Oscar Eriksson hit a shot outside the penalty area that glanced off the upright. Osheyack hit an amazing blast from the top of the eighteen that was labeled for the goal before Bascom stretched to tip the ball over the bar. As time wound down, it seemed as though it would be only a matter of time, but overtime was beckoning as a full harvest moon rose and looked down on the sweating, steaming squads, their breath sending plumes into the chilly night air.

The scoreboard clock had stopped at two minutes for what seemed an eternity when Hanna stepped in front of an errant clearing pass and slid the ball into a spot for Eriksson to run onto. Never hesitating, Oscar earned his spot in Hanover’s soccer Valhalla with the epitome of a big-time goal, and his teammates easily played out the string and ran their record to 3-0. Post-game handshakes were more sincere and meaningful than usual, and the Kearsarge Assistant Coach shared warm words for the Marauders that were sincere and heartfelt. Both teams renewed their search, again fruitless, but worth it nonetheless for the repeated demonstration that the game was important, but would always take a back seat to sportsmanship and concern for others. It was a rare night.

Hanover’s return to action takes them on the road Thursday and Friday for games against two undefeated teams eager to make their entire season by knocking off the champs. The Marauders play at Laconia Thursday, and then visit Pembroke for their Homecoming this Friday, eager to maintain their status as the class of Class I.

Hanover-Bow Summary

HANOVER BOYS OUTPACE BOW 2-0 IN TITLE GAME REMATCH

The Hanover High boys played a strong game in their home opener, methodically beating a rebuilding Bow side 2-0 in a rematch of last year’s Class I title game. Since the Marauders took their third straight state title last fall, they have clearly reloaded at a quicker pace than the Falcons. Hanover dominated the contest in every respect, out-shooting Bow 24-3. Seniors Henry Caldwell and Ben Rimmer each scored, with Caldwell also assisting on Rimmer’s second-half strike.

The steady drizzle on Merriman-Branch Field did little to slow the pace of Hanover’s attack, which was on track right from the start. Four minutes from the start, Caldwell shook loose on the left side and fed a ball across the mouth of the goal that was blazed just wide of the far post by Rimmer. Kevin Dade was a constant presence in the Bow penalty area, threatening to flick several headers on goal. Lou Gemunden unloaded a pair of lasers from outside the box, including one that was nicely saved by Falcon Keeper Carter Bennett. Eric Jayne also made his presence felt at midfield, and was a key link in the attack.

In the meantime, the Marauders completely stifled any offense by Bow, whose faux Scandinavian hairdos initially delighted Hanover’s Swedish midfielder Oscar Eriksson, who momentarily thought that he was surrounded by kindred spirits, and was then mystified by the visitors’ tonsorial affectations. The Marauder back four of Dan Remillard. Mike Tecca, Lou Gemunden and Nate Hanna did an excellent job of containing Bow at midfield, winning headers decisively, and restarting the Hanover attack. Trevor Barlowe did superbly sweeping in front of the foursome, and was the best ball winner on the pitch. Bow managed one long shot by striker Alex Davies that looked dangerous, and an equally long-range offering by Eddie Berke that was easily gathered by Marauder keeper Rhys Cyrus.

Hanover broke the ice in the 32nd minute when Dade’s sharp header on goal was bobbled by Bennett and Henry Caldwell was there to pounce on the rebound for his first goal of the season and 1-0 goal lead that could be said to be have been insurmountable.

The Marauders came out strongly after the halftime interval and threatened to increase the lead almost immediately. Kevin Dade’s shot clattered off the crossbar and was headed to safety by a Bow defender. Eric Jayne’s hard shot was knocked down by Bennett, but no one was home for the rebound. Fourteen minutes in, Henry Caldwell shook loose in the right corner and hit a low, hard cross to Rimmer at the corner of the penalty area. The Co-Captain ripped a low first –time shot that blazed past the near post and into the net to make the score 2-0.

A number of substitutes performed well off the bench. Miles Peterson showed excellent positional sense and kept the pressure on Bow from behind. Andrew Holzberger was very active on the left flank, and Jake Harris had a good run at right midfield. Trey Rebman got his feet wet in his first varsity action, delighted to be free of his crucial (and dry) duties during the first part of the match, replicating his excellent work at Souhegan.

Cyrus made one more save on a free kick by Sean Dippold for his second and final save, earning his first shutout of the season and third of his career over a three-year stretch. He blanked Plymouth as a sophomore year and shut out Kennett last fall before departing for his year in Germany as an exchange student.

Next week will provide and interesting challenge for the Marauders, who play three away matches in four days, beginning with a trip down 89 Tuesday for a 7:00 game at Kearsarge, and then a Thursday trip to Laconia for a 6:00 start. Friday Hanover plays at Pembroke, currently 4-0 with wins over Bow and Kearsarge and a Tuesday matchup with Lebanon. “Three games in this short stretch might be a problem for many teams, but we have the depth to handle the demands. We have a number of players who are dying to see some playing time, and this will be a wonderful opportunity to show what they can do. We’ll take them one at a time, and learn a lot about ourselves.”

You may be aware that I have offered your sons the opportunity to raise funds for the CROP Walk to fight world hunger and participate in the event on Sunday, Oct. 5th in Lebanon. Please let me know if you would like more information about this worthwhile community service event. This is strictly voluntary. Thank you for supporting your sons in this endeavor if they choose to participate.

Hanover-Souhegan Summary

HANOVER BOYS OPEN THE SEASON WITH A SPLASH

The Hanover High boys soccer team opened its Class I title defense on a high note, overcoming both the elements and a strong Souhegan team with a 1-0 overtime victory Saturday night. Playing in a steady downpour for the entire match, two of the semifinalists from last fall’s Class I Tournament nevertheless managed to play postseason-quality soccer. After 80 minutes of scoreless soccer, the match was decided seven minutes into the first sudden-death overtime when Marauder Captain Ben Rimmer fed freshman Isiah Fariel for a breakaway goal.

Hanover overcame injuries to two defensive stalwarts and did a good job limiting the hosts to four shots on goal while racking up 21 of their own, including several near misses in the second half by Kevin Dade and Dan Remillard and a shot ticketed for the corner by Trevor Barlowe that was denied by a brilliant save from Saber goalkeeper Kyle Robertson.

Souhegan came into the match with a 2-0 record which included an impressive road win against perennial Class I contender Con-Val, while Hanover was playing its first match of the year. The Marauders lost senior starting goalkeeper Rhys Cyrus to a hand injury during warm-ups, and were further challenged when junior center back Gunnar Shaw had to leave the game with a mild knee sprain twenty minutes into the match. Junior Sam Gest took over in the goal and did an outstanding job, recording his third career shutout. Sophomore Joe Carey took over for Shaw and did an outstanding job in his first varsity game, consistently winning balls and clearing with confidence.

The Marauders took control of the game early in the first half, largely because of quality play from their all-senior midfield of Co-Captains Trevor Barlowe and Ben Rimmer, returning All-Stater Yosef Osheyack, and Swedish foreign exchange student Oscar Eriksson. Barlowe stepped into the holding midfield spot anchored last year by All New England choice Angus Kennedy, and Eriksson continued his excellent transition to American high school soccer, taking a leadership role offensively. Rimmer, second on last year’s title team in assists, picked up where he left off and was a threat all evening on the right flank, leading the team in shots before turning playmaker on the winning goal. Osheyack, who spent three weeks this summer playing for the U.S. National Deaf Team in the Deaf World Cup in Greece, was a dominant two-way player on the left side, and further strengthened the argument that he is one of the stat’s top high school players.

Hanover’s first-half edge in play turned into an even larger advantage in the second half, but Souhegan’s typically stingy defense held firm despite a 9-1 Marauder shot advantage and a 4-1 margin in corner kicks.
Heading into the first overtime, Hanover Rob Grabill elected to rest senior starting strikers Kevin Dade and Henry Caldwell, and inserted sophomore shotmaker Eric Jayne and freshman Isaiah Fariel, who had led his summer soccer team with a league-high 25 goals. Despite a career playing time total of six minutes, Fariel was as calm as a varsity veteran when Rimmer threaded a through ball to him, sidestepping the Saber keeper after outracing him to the ball, and calmly slotting home the game winner before being buried on the now-sodden Souhegan turf by a pigpile of equally soggy teammates.

“This was a nice way to open the season,” commented Coach Rob Grabill. “We still have a lot of players who are adjusting to new positions or new responsibilities, and we showed a lot of character in overcoming some adversity tonight. Beating a quality team like Souhegan is a nice achievement any time, but it’s twice as rewarding under these circumstances. This is a real confidence boost for us, and should help us continue to develop into the sort of team we want to be.”

The Marauders open their home season on Friday with a 4:00 match against Bow in a rematch of last year’s Class I Championship final. Hanover won its third straight title with a 1-0 victory over the Falcons, who will visit Merriman-Branch field with revenge on their minds. “We’ll be working hard to be ready,” said Grabill. “This should be a hard-fought and entertaining game”.

HHS Soccer Alumni

Hanover Soccer Alumni Shine on the Next Level

Over the years, dozens of Hanover High players have continued their soccer careers in college. This list is too long to repeat here, but even the roster of current college players is an impressive one:

Senior Mike Dodge is the starting center back and Captain at Connecticut College. Junior Jimmy Alexander, who led Hanover in goal scoring during the 2005 championship season, was the leading goal scorer for Bentley College last season, and a regular starter. Junior Woody Redpath is a midfielder at Wesleyan University, and sophomore Jory Kahn is his teammate on the Cardinal squad, starting for the second season as center back after a freshman campaign that saw him score three goals on restarts. Elsewhere in the always-competitive NESCAC, Junior Ben Mackinnon, Hanover’s all-time assist leader, is a midfielder for Williams College, and freshman teammate Angus Kennedy has made an immediate impact for the Ephs, vying for playing time as a back. Sophomore Sandy Feuer is getting regular playing time up front for Colorado College, and just scored his first career goal in a win over Ripon. Feuer’s HHS classmate Jeff Levin took a year off before entering New York University, but has picked up right where he left off, starting at midfield for the Violets. Besides Angus Kennedy, four other members of the Marauder Class of 2008 have launched their college careers. Matt Wetherell now wears number 8 for Haverford College, and is vying for playing time as a defender. Eric Barthold had an excellent preseason at Colby College, leading the way in preseason conditioning. Ben Harwick is one of three first-year goalkeepers at Skidmore College, and Oliver Horton is on the squad at Knox College in Illinois.

There are many other New Hampshire high school graduates in the college ranks, but few schools can claim both the quantity and quality of Hanover’s alums. We look forward to keeping track of their exploits, and adding to the list in years to come.
